Retailer to feature winning design of Sims 2 H&M Fashion Runway gamer
NEW YORK — It must be fun to design clothing on models that are thin and perfect, have no temperament or dietary issues, and can strut the catwalk without ever tripping.
But these idealized models aren't real people — they exist only in the virtual world of The Sims 2 computer game. Without needle or thread, more than 1,000 real-world aspiring designers recently crafted original outfits for their Sims 2 characters, or avatars.
One winner was chosen by retailer H&M to bring his virtual outfit to life and sell it in their bricks-and-mortar clothing stores. The winning design, a short, black-and-white striped, scoop-neck dress, was fabricated inside Sims 2 by Beau Fornillos, a 21-year-old American interior design student.
The Sims 2 H&M Fashion Runway (thesims2fashionrunway.ea.com) contest ran for seven weeks during the summer of 2007, with the runway shows simulcast on Yahoo. Clothing was designed for six categories of Sims life: Party Time, Skate Park, Street Wear, Night Out, Let's Go To The Beach and Red Carpet.
Fans voted for their favorites, while the entries were also judged by several members of the H&M design team in Stockholm, Sweden. Fashionistas can grab Fornillos's dress in real-life sizes at select H&M locations beginning on July 31.
H&M is scheduled to open at Westfield Southcenter July 25, and at University Village and downtown Seattle in the fall.

"Sex and the City" fans planning big film weekend
The online survey of more than 9,300 people by Fandango, which sells tickets for more than 15,000 U.S. screens, also found 80 percent were planning to attend a "Sex and the City" get-together before or after seeing the film.
And 68 percent of those surveyed -- 94 percent of whom were women -- said they would be drinking the Cosmopolitan cocktail, made famous by "Sex and the City's" Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha.
"There has been some significant anticipation for this," said Rick Butler, Fandango's chief operating officer. "The television series has a loyal fan base."
But the movie is unlikely to make anywhere near the $151.1 million grossed by "Indiana Jones" when it opened over the U.S. Memorial Day weekend. Box office predictions for "Sex and the City" range from $25 to $40 million its first weekend.
The "Sex and the City" film picks up where the hit HBO cable TV series ended four years ago after six seasons. Based on Candace Bushnell's autobiographical columns in The New York Observer newspaper, the TV series won eight Golden Globes and seven Emmys.

More Crystal-clear Tv Sets On Way Says Sony Chief
Sony's OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) television sets, which produce pictures
nearly as sharp as a mirror but which thus far have only been available in an 11-inch
model costing $2,500, will be available in 27-inch models within the next year, Sony
chief Howard Stringer said Wednesday. Speaking at a conference on digital technology
in Carlsbad, CA Wednesday, Stringer observed that the screen is so thin, "you can
wrap it around your arm." He did not indicate precisely when the larger sets will
become available or how much they will cost. "It's a complicated process and obviously
we are working very hard to find out how to mass-produce it but until then it's very
expensive," he said.

Pete Wentz Defends Ashlee Simpson's Pregnancy Secret
The Fall Out Boy bassist and his new wife have been dogged by baby rumours in recent weeks, and now the news is out Wentz has defended their decision to wait until the first trimester was over before confirming the happy occasion.
He tells MTV: "Every woman, no matter who they are or what they do for a living, has the right to wait at least three months before sharing this very personal news. We wanted to wait until after the first trimester before confirming anything, just like any other couple.
"Being a boy I have no idea how to respond to such things and my first instinct was to protect her and the baby.
"It's insane that you can't let happy news brew in Hollywood. This wasn't about press or anything. It was about the health of the baby and trying to find a way to be happy with what should be the most happy time of our lives in the middle of a press blitz.
"I apologize to anyone who felt misinformed but the truth is, the person and growing baby is who I felt most loyal to protect and defend."
The pair wed in Encino, California earlier this month.
What do you think Pete and Ashlee should call their baby? Be sure to leave your comments below.
Spears' father to retain control over affairs
Jamie Spears was granted "temporary conservatorship" over the 26-year-old singer's affairs two weeks ago when she was in a Los Angeles hospital for psychiatric evaluation.
Yesterday Los Angeles Court Commissioner Reva Goetz extended that conservatorship, which gives the star's father control over her business, finances and some personal affairs until 10 March.
Spears' 30-year-old brother Bryan was been named co-trustee of his sister's trust along with Los Angeles attorney Ivan Taback.
Reuters reports that, in a related filing, attorney Jon Eardley said the case should be moved to federal court because the issue on which Jamie Spears was granted conservatorship centres on medication Spears is supposed to take.
The attorney claims that restrictions placed on Spears by her father "interfere with the effectiveness of the scheduled medications".
Eardley's filing said that under the conservatorship, the singer has been denied the right to meet freely with friends, make and receive phone calls, drive a car and gain access to money or credit cards.
A representative for Eardley said that he was "not at liberty to discuss" who hired the attorney.
Lord of the Rings heirs sue New Line Cinema
The trustees of the writer's British charity, The Tolkien Trust, and the original publishers of 'The Lord of the Rings', HarperCollins, have cited a failure to pay a contractually agreed 7.5% of gross profit for the three films based on 'The Lord of the Rings' novels.
They are seeking in excess of $150m in compensatory damages, unspecified punitive damages and a court order giving the trust a right to terminate New Line's rights to make more films based on the author's writings, including 'The Hobbit', according to the statement.
The suit follows 'Lord of the Rings' director Peter Jackson's lawsuit against New Line for underpayment that was settled in December. When that deal was finalised, Jackson signed on to be executive producer of 'The Hobbit'.
New Line, a division of global media conglomerate Time Warner Inc, declined to comment on the new suit.
A statement from the trustees said: "New Line has not paid the plaintiffs even one penny of its contractual share of gross receipts despite the billions of dollars of gross revenue generated by these wildly successful motion pictures."
"To make matters worse, to date New Line has even prevented the plaintiffs from auditing the last two films of the series."
The trustees were paid an upfront fee of about $62,500 in an "upfront sequel fee" and nothing more, trustee spokesman Lonnie Soury said.
The three movies, 'The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring', 'The Lord of the Rings: The Twin Towers' and 'The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King', took in nearly $3bn at worldwide box offices.
